We’re living in a society and in a time in which people find it easy to write off those who have transgressed a social boundary important to their group; and people are writing off those who simply do not think like them. (How many “friend divorces” have occurred over support for our President?) In this sermon, Dr. Vamos compares the current “cancel culture” tendencies in our own time to that of ancient Corinth, where the name of the game was to be “wise.” The cross–“foolishness to the Greeks and a stumbling block to the Jews”–is both a “no” to our tendency to think of ourselves as right, wise, “in,” and at the same time offers a radically loving way of looking at the world.
