October 5 – Chuck Colson and C. S. Lewis
On October 5, our attention will focus on the spiritual transformations of Chuck Colson and C. S. Lewis. Colson was Special Counsel to President Richard Nixon (1969 to 1973) and a Watergate conspirator, who became an evangelical Christian leader and founder of the non-profit ministry Prison Fellowship. Colson credits another modern convert, C.S. Lewis, for the change God brought into his life. Lewis, the beloved author of The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity, was a former atheist.
October 12 – Mother Teresa and Bono
Many regard Mother Teresa as the supreme example of unswerving religious faith. Yet privately, Mother Teresa expressed doubts and struggles over her religious beliefs lasting nearly 50 years until the end of her life. Are faith and doubt mutually exclusive? The life of Bono, the lead singer of the rock band U2, presents another apparent contradiction. Bono is both a celebrity rock star with devoted fans across the world, as well as being a Christian humanitarian and crusader for the world’s poor. How can faith and celebrity mix?
