Peace and Justice Movie Matinee

– Freedom Riders – February 18

From 3 – 5pm in the Lounge, admission is free

This month’s Peace and Justice Movie Matinee will be on Saturday, February 18 at 3pm in the lounge. We will be showing the movie Freedom Riders.  The “Freedom Riders” were non-violent civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated Southern US in 1961 and subsequent years to challenge the non-enforcement of the rule that segregated public buses were unconstitutional. The Southern states had ignored the rulings and the federal government did nothing to enforce them. This documentary film marked the 50th anniversary. Participants included John Lewis and Diane Nash. The violent reactions they provoked bolstered the credibility of the American Civil Rights Movement.
